Fayette County commissioners hold public hearing on proposed zoning change for windmills

May 29, 2009

The Herald Standard Reports:

The Fayette County commissioners Thursday held a public hearing on a request that, if approved, would allow wind turbine developers to construct turbines in certain zoning districts without obtaining approval of the county’s zoning hearing board.
More than two-dozen people approved the public hearing on the proposed change.
Iberdrola Renewables Inc., formerly PPM Atlantic Renewable, is seeking a change to the zoning ordinance to allow wind turbines in agricultural and manufacturing districts as a permitted use.
The zoning ordinance currently allows construction of wind turbines in agricultural and manufacturing zones by special exception only, which means approval must be granted by the Fayette County Zoning Hearing Board.
The commissioners will take action on the request to make wind turbines a permitted use at a public meeting. The next monthly meeting of the commissioners is slated for Thursday, June 25.
