Normalville denied opportunity to represent himself in slaying case
The Herald Standard Reports:
A Fayette County judge ruled that a 26-year-old Normalville man serving a life sentence for killing a girl in 2003 is not fit to represent himself in post-conviction hearings.
However, Judge Steve P. Leskinen did order defense attorney Diane Zerega to furnish her client, Brian Keith Hays, with copies and transcripts of all court proceedings so he can independently research his own case.
Hays was convicted in Oct. 2004 on charges of second-degree murder, statutory sexual assault and abuse of a corpse in the May 2003 death of 13-year-old Danielle Nicole McManus and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
