Belle Vernon

Belle Vernon is a borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania along the Monongahela River. The population was 1,211 at the 2000 census. The town is served by the Belle Vernon Area School District, which is actually centered in Rostraver.

History

Belle Vernon was laid out by Noah Speer in 1813 and erected as a borough April 15, 1863.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,211 people, 612 households, and 288 families residing in Belle Vernon. The population density was 1,798.3/km² (4,647.4/mi²). There were 716 housing units at an average density of 1,063.3/km² (2,747.7/mi²). The racial makeup of Belle Vernon was 96.12% White, 2.15% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.25% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population.

There were 612 households out of which 17.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 52.9% were non-families. 48.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 30.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.96 and the average family size was 2.89.

Belle Vernon’s population was spread out with 17.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 28.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 80.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.8 males.

The median income for a household in Belle Vernon was $18,068, and the median income for a family was $36,094. Males had a median income of $22,434 versus $20,950 for females. The per capita income for Belle Vernon was $12,919. About 5.8% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.7% of those under age 18 and 23.1% of those age 65 or over.
