Braddock’s Grave

Braddock’s Grave is located about one mile east of Fort Necessity National Battlefield. British General Edward Braddock, commander of the British Forces in North America, was responsible for the building of a road to expand the western frontier. Braddock’s Road was the first road open to the public for travel through southwestern Pennsylvania and was the predecessor of The National Road.

Braddock was mortally wounded in an engagement with the French and Indians near Fort Duquesne, now Pittsburgh. He and his regiment fled along the wilderness road to a site near Great Meadows. On July 13, 1755, several days after his defeat, Braddock died. Young Lieutenant George Washington read the burial service at his grave. His grave was hidden by the British, hoping to keep site’s location out of the hands of the enemy. His body was discovered in 1804 by men making repairs to the wilderness road.
