Newell is a borough in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The population was 551 at the 2000 census.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 551 people, 222 households, and 162 families residing in Newell. The population density was 343.1/km² (892.6/mi²). There were 232 housing units at an average density of 144.5/km² (375.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.82% White and 0.18% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.
There were 222 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.91.
Newell’s population was spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in Newell was $33,988, and the median income for a family was $41,477. Males had a median income of $38,611 versus $20,556 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,592.
